A steel sculpture to display full-scale steel connections, that students can walk around and study, was first designed and erected on the campus of the University of Florida in 1986. Since then, several universities across America and Canada have erected similar steel sculptures with certain modifications in the original design.

A similar structural steel sculpture was erected in Bhilai Institute of Technology, Durg, Chhattishgarh, India on June 01, 2006. This sculpture is significantly different from those in the west and utilizes sections that are available in India. This sculpture acts as a teaching aid while teaching steel structures to the students and helps students in visualizing different shapes, configurations and connections in steel structures.

The total weight of the sculpture is about 2.0 T and the size of the sculpture is around 2.0 m x 2.5 m x 3.0 m. Such type of steel sculpture is the first of its kind in India.
